In 2008, TSC launched its first private equity fund focused on owning meaningful stakes in smaller, private companies and opportunities. We then bring our experience as owners and operators to assist in the creation and execution of a growth strategy. As an investor itself, TSC brings a unique perspective to our examination of potential situations, private investments opportunities and clients. At present, TSC and its affiliates manage an equity portfolio comprised of eight (8) different businesses and is actively seeking new investment opportunities.
Transaction Advisory is one of our core capabilities. Throughout our careers, we have advised companies, from start-up to multi-billion dollar enterprises, in the successful sale of their business, acquisition of or merger with another entity or raising outside debt or equity growth capital. We have also bought and sold our own business and raised capital from traditional banks, alternative lenders and equity investors. Our success is driven by our understanding of valuation, structure, positioning, negotiation and our proprietary preparation methods and process.
Our professional experience and relationships provide us with the foundation to assist our clients and portfolio companies in identifying critical success factors, determining a realistic execution plan and understanding the capital and human resources required. We also work with our clients to create a dashboard of milestones and metrics to measure progress and next steps. We are or have been business owners and operators, are Board members to both profit and non-profit entities, managed executive teams, launched businesses and turned around underperforming businesses. Ultimately, we understand what it's going to take because we've done it before ourselves.
TSC has created a proprietary business evaluation named The Buyer's Perspective that provides a comprehensive, qualitative analysis of the aspects of the business that will be reviewed by the buyer in determining the appropriate business valuation and then again later in the due diligence process. We also provide specific areas of improvement which could add to the ultimate exit valuation at the time of sale. Finally, to our clients who are in the process of selling, we will also work to identify potential synergies or other areas of valuation creation to a specific or type of buyer.
